HOUSTON (May 8, 2009)--Four people have been shot while off-roading in an SUV in Liberty County and two were in critical condition Friday.

Investigators say it appears propertyowners Sheila and Gayle Muhs mistakenly thought the two men and two children were trespassing.

The shootings happened Thursday night near a residential area about 40 miles northeast of Houston.

Liberty County Chief Deputy Ken DeFoor says the two men and two children stopped near the Trinity River so the youngsters could go to the bathroom.

Donald Coffey Jr., 7, was shot in the head and was in critical condition Friday at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

Patrick Cammack, 36, was also was shot in the head and was also in critical condition.

Donald Coffey Sr. has a pellet wound in his right shoulder.

His 5-year-old daughter, Destiny, was shot in the elbow but is in good condition.

The Muhs are charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and remained in custody late Friday afternoon.

The deputy says Sheila Muhs called 911 and said: "They're out here tearing up the levee, so I shot them."

DeFoor said the victims were unarmed and the levee is not private property.

From what I gathered from the Houston news was that these families knew each other and their children go to school together. In fact, the victims had been visiting the shooters just hours before the shooting. The family had been riding 4 wheelers on some sand dunes near the river. The 7 yr. old that died was shot in the face.

Having spent lots of time in East Texas over the years, I must ask if any of you have spent any time in Liberty County. The parts of Liberty County that have yet to become part of Houston are the land of the dueling banjos. Don't believe me, go check for yourselves. Now you add dueling banjos and two strung out meth-heads like these two, and guess what you get. That's right, just what you see here. Unfortunately, as several of you have said "You can't fix stupid". But you can lock it up for the rest of it's life or eliminate it from the gene-pool. And since eliminating it from the gene-pool is highly unlikely, our prison systems will continue to get bigger and stupider each day. It's very sad what our world is coming to. My sympathies to the families that were on the wrong end of the shotgun. It should have been pointed in the opposite direction. RATSO - Keep the comments coming...I love em.
