Texas Priest Stabbed Outside Church Friday
A 42-year-old Texas priest was flown to a hospital Friday after a man stabbed him outside of his church after morning Mass.

SINTON (May 8, 2009)--A 42-year-old Roman Catholic priest was flown by helicopter to a Corpus Christi hospital Friday after police said the was stabbed in the chest outside his church.

The Rev. Shaji F. Varghese was listed in guarded condition going into surgery at Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi.

Michael Perry, the flight nurse aboard the HALO-Flight helicopter that carried Varghese about 30 miles to the hospital, told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times that the priest had just completed saying morning Mass and was walking outside the church when a man attacked him.

Marty Wind is a spokesman for the Corpus Christi Roman Catholic diocese said Sinton police have taken a man into custody.

No identity has been released.
