(May 11, 2009)-Monday marks the 56th anniversary of the deadly tornado that ripped through the heart of Downtown Waco in 1953.

The tornado touched down near Lorena just after 4:30 p.m. on May 11, 1953 and moved north toward Waco leaving a trail of damage in excess of 20 miles before it dispersed near Mt. Calm.

The tornado seriously injured more than 140 other people caused about $41.2 million in property damage:

  • 217 commercial buildings sustained major damage,
  • 179 sustained lesser damages;

I was a senior from Bruceville-Eddy High school in 1953. We came to Waco for our Senior Day outing on May 11, it would be a day that will remain with me the rest of my life. It was a experience that sends chills down my spine, although I'm now 74 I remember it as if it were yesterday. We were in the Waco theatre and we really didn't know what was happening,but when we got to our car it was filled with brick, we just got in the car and threw the brick out and headed home, only to be stopped and told we couldn,t get out of the city. When we finally got home, my parents knew nothing about it

I remember my Daddy driving our family to Waco to view the damages of the tornado the day after it struck. I was 8 years old and I still remember seeing the damaged building in the downtown area. I saw manicins scatered along the sidewalk and I asked my Dad if they were dead people.

I was a senior at Waco High. I recall the principal, Tom Ware, speaking over the intercom late in the morning that storms were in the area but lessening in intensity. I played on the baseball team and the game with Temple scheduled for that afternoon at Katy Park was canceled. School was dismissed early and I got in my car and out of curiosity was going to drive by the playing field. When I got to Franklin I noticed how very dark it had gotten, so I decided not to continue to the field. I turned right (Franklin Ave. was a two-way street then) and headed for my parents' hardware store located next to the 25th St. Theater. As I drove on Franklin, it was so dark behind me I could not see anything out the rear window of the car. Standing in front of my parents' store and watching the traffic go by, I noticed how many cars had windows broken. A short time later I heard about the storm. Some of my classmates were killed; one in the underground dressing room at the Sun Pool.
