(May 11, 2009)-Monday marks the 56th anniversary of the deadly tornado that ripped through the heart of Downtown Waco in 1953.

I was 1 day short of 8 months old when Waco was hit,my husband, John, was 6yrs. old. We lived at Harrison Switch but my daddy worked at Cameron Mills. Daddy drove the tractor that pulled the trailer, filled with saw dust and boards, to the dump down on 3rd st. the trailer was cleaned and he never made it to the dump. He knew something was happening but didn't know exactly what until it was over with.

I was a senior from Bruceville-Eddy High school in 1953. We came to Waco for our Senior Day outing on May 11, it would be a day that will remain with me the rest of my life. It was a experience that sends chills down my spine, although I'm now 74 I remember it as if it were yesterday. We were in the Waco theatre and we really didn't know what was happening, but when we got to our car it was filled with brick, we just got in the car and threw the brick out and headed home, only to be stopped and told we couldn,t get out of the city. When we finally got home, my parents knew nothing about it

I remember my Daddy driving our family to Waco to view the damages of the tornado the day after it struck. I was 8 years old and I still remember seeing the damaged building in the downtown area. I saw manicins scatered along the sidewalk and I asked my Dad if they were dead people.
