LEON COUNTY (May 11, 2009)--A temporary ambulance service is in place in northeast Leon County, and a permanent service is a few weeks away after Saturday's election, but Sunday, a nightmare scenario played out on I-45, leaving a child dead.
Minutes before noon Sunday, the Department of Public Safety says a southbound vehicle from Arlington veered out of its lane just north of Buffalo.
The driver over-corrected, causing the vehicle to flip into the median.
Zachary Missik, 11 of Arlington, was in the backseat and not wearing a seat belt, according to DPS.
He ejected from the SUV.
He was flown to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco where he died about 90 minutes after the accident.
The driver, 68-year-old Shirley Elliott of Arlington and another passenger, 40-year-old Mary Ann Elliott also of Arlington, were taken to East Texas Medical Center in Fairfield with non-life-threatening injuries.
That portion of Leon County voted Saturday in favor of creating an emergency service district to restore permanent ambulance service to the area.
Just weeks ago, Palestine EMS discontinued its all-but-free service to the cities of Buffalo, Oakwood and Flo, as well as a highly traveled stretch of I-45, which runs between Houston and Dallas.
Legacy EMS had been contracted by the county for temporary service. It will continue providing ambulances and care until a permanent provided is determined in the coming weeks.
A 10-cent property tax increase for northeast Leon County residents came with the vote in favor of creating an ESD.

As a family member, I know that Shirley was not supposed to be driving. She was told by her doctors not to drive due to having spasms that have occurred due to the stroke that she had a few months ago. She promised all of us that she wouldn't drive and she chose to anyway. Whether or not Zach had his seatbelt on, is not Shirley's fault but the wreck was her fault. She had a spasm and ran off the road when she couldn't keep control of the vehicle. She is in the wrong for this fatality and justice should be served.
This is my nephew that you all are speaking of. He is in a better place. Enough said. He was miserable here on earth. He feared his mother, father, and grandmother and no child should have to live in fear like he did. He was such a sweet, kind hearted young man and he deserves to be with the angels.
Princess--Your pathetic! The child took his seatbelt off for a moment..like any parent with children has probably experienced your child un-buckling at some point in their life. I speak from experience with 3 children whom have un-buckled..so shut your mouth!! God help if you ever or any ill hearted person ( I won't even call you a human)whom chooses to leave such sick, hateful remarks has an accident. Karma is a bear!! Shame on this paper for heading the article or even adding that in about ambulance service. The friends and family of Shirley and Zachary KNOW WHAT HAPPENED AND WHY...BUT MOST IMPORTANT GOD-IT WAS HIS PLAN!!! Sorry people!
