Baylor Students Continue To Grieve, Condition Of Student Injured In Deadly Crash Improves

WACO (May 13, 2009)-The Baylor campus continues to grieve this week after a terrible car crash killed one student and critically injured another.

Counseling for classmates was available Tuesday on campus, where final exams are underway.

University staff organized a memorial gathering Tuesday night at the Bobo Student Life Center.

Flowers were left at the tree Tuesday where 22-year-old Brendon Mooney, an exercise physiology major from Spring, lost his life in Monday night’s crash.

Mooney, the driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was a member of the university’s Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

Baylor Junior Anthony Yacoub, 22, of Coppell, was trapped in the wreckage.

After Waco firefighters freed him, he was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery.

He was in critical condition throughout the day Tuesday, but Tuesday evening Baylor’s chaplain said his family told him that his condition has been upgraded to serious.

The accident happened just after 10:30 p.m. Monday on South 3rd Street between Garden Drive and Breckenridge Drive where a southbound 2008 Toyota pickup truck left the roadway, crashed through a fence and struck a tree.

Dozens of Baylor students gathered crying and embracing each other as police officers gathered evidence at the accident scene.

Waco Police Sergeant Gary Harrison called the crash one of the worst in his experience.

"I have been in law enforcement for 30 years and this is one of the worst accidents that I have ever seen, that I have to be a part of, had to work,” said Sgt. Harrison.

Speed was a factor in the crash, police said Tuesday.
