HEARNE (May 15, 2009)-A Texas A&M sophomore is dead after the vehicle she was driving skidded into oncoming traffic Thursday evening.

The accident happened just after 5:30 p.m. Thursday on State Highway 6 about six miles south of Hearne.

Nineteen-year-old Serena Swanland, 19, of College Station, was traveling southbound in her 2008 Kia when she lost control and skidded into oncoming traffic, a dispatcher with the Texas Department of Public Safety said Friday.

The 2008 Kia was struck broadside by a 2005 Ford Pick-up Truck driven by Gene Mullenberg, 61, of Grand Prairie.

Mullenberg and his wife Pamela, 58, also of Grand Prairie were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bryan where they were listed in good condition Thursday.

Swanland was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:06 p.m. by Justice Aguirree; her body was taken to Memorial Funeral Home in Hearne.

DPS Trooper Matthew Sliva, who investigated the accident, reports Swanland was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

DPS Investigators are seeking a third driver who saw the collision.

Witnesses on the scene say the man, who was driving a white Chevrolet pickup truck, stopped briefly after the crash and spoke with other witnesses.

The man is described as 6 feet 2 inches tall, muscular, with black curly hair, and a dark skin tone.

He was wearing a white pullover shirt and blue jeans.

Witnesses say the man had “good teeth” and spoke in a a foreign accent, possibly French.

Anyone with information about the location of this witness is asked to call 979-776-3131.

Serena was one of my best friends, we were inseparable all threw middle school, and stayed close even after she left in high school. The day i found out she died, my life felt like it was crumbling around me, and even today, i still cant go a day without thinking about her and my heart hurting. I miss her so much, and i pray for her family everyday, and wish them strength to help deal with this.

For anyone who truly knows Serena, they know that it was out of her character to not wear a seatbelt, i beleive that this one either failed or someone on the scene unbuckled it. Serena was an amazing person, she will be missed.
