(October 29, 2006)--A new poll says Gov. Rick Perry has low job performance ratings but will probably win re-election anyway.
A poll conducted for the Houston Chronicle and KHOU-TV says Perry has 38 percent support, the highest among the five candidates in the governor's race.
Democrat Chris Bell has 22 percent support and independent Carole Keeton Strayhorn has 21 percent, putting them in a statistical tie.
Independent author and comedian Kinky Friedman is polling at 10.5 percent, while Libertarian James Werner is registering at 1 percent.
Overall, 54 percent of those surveyed say the governor is doing a fair or poor job.
But the Republican base is solidly in Perry's corner, with 68 percent saying they will vote for him.
Zogby International conducted the telephone survey of 1,003 likely voters between Oct. 23 and Oct. 25.
The polling sample was 63 percent white, 23 percent Hispanic, 12 percent black and 2 percent other.
The margin of error is plus or minus 3.2 percent.
