(October 30, 2006)—Waco and Killeen rank among the top 30 percent of the most dangerous cities in the US in 2005 according to an annual report released Monday by Morgan Quitno Press, which uses FBI data to rank the country’s safest and most dangerous cities every year.

Killeen ranked 268th most dangerous among the 371 cities surveyed, and Waco ranked 266th in the report.

Last year Killeen was ranked 304th most dangerous and Waco was ranked 201st.

Dallas and Houston were among the ten most dangerous cities of 500,000 population or larger. Dallas ranked 6th and Houston ranked 10th.

But El Paso, Austin, San Antonio and Fort Worth were all ranked among the safest cities of 500,000 or more.

El Paso ranked 3rd, Austin 5th, San Antonio 7th and Fort Worth 9th.

Round Rock was ranked the 8th safest city among cities with populations between 75,000 and 99,000.

Round Rock was also ranked 13th most safest among all of the cities surveyed.

St. Louis was the most dangerous city in the United States in 2005.

According to FBI figures, violent crime in St. Louis surged nearly 20 percent from 2004 to last year.

Scott Morgan, president of Morgan Quitno Press, says he's not surprised to see St. Louis top the list, because it has been among the ten most dangerous cities for years.

The second most dangerous city was Detroit, followed by Flint, Mich., and Compton, Calif.

The safest city in 2005 was Brick, N .J., population about 75,000, followed by Amherst, N.Y. and Mission Viejo, Calif.
