(October 30, 2006)--California Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, is taking the first step toward a run for president in 2008.

His decision to form an exploratory committee allows Hunter to start raising money and to organize supporters in early GOP primary states such as Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

Hunter has represented a district in San Diego County for 26 years.

He made his announcement at a news conference on the San Diego waterfront.

Until now, Hunter's name hadn't been discussed among the many candidates considering a presidential bid.

Hunter is a Vietnam War vet who's made his mark in Congress by calling for a strong military and border security.
