(October 30, 2006)--Scientists say new vaccines will have to be developed to battle a newfound strain of bird flu.
The new strain was discovered by scientists at the University of Hong Kong and is reported in Tuesday’s issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The report says the strain has become the main variation of bird flu in some parts of China and has spread to other countries in Asia.
One of the report's co-authors says the strain has infected people but hasn't been shown to pass easily from person to person.
An official with the World Health Organization says the WHO is working with China's health ministry to develop a new vaccine.
