FORT WORTH (May 19, 2009)--Seven horses died and another was injured after flames swept through a barn at Lake Arlington in southeastern Fort Worth.

Fort Worth fire spokesman Lt. Kent Worley said that the fire broke out Sunday.

Some horses escaped the flames when firefighters opened a barn door, but six didn't make it.

A member of the Circle L 5 Riding Club, Willie Collins, said a seventh horse later had to be put down.

The horses belonged to members of the well-known African-American riding club established in the early 1950s.

An official with the Humane Society of North Texas said a 4-year-old mare was being treated for burns over 20 percent to 30 percent of her body.

The horse was burned down the back, had a gash on her leg and had lost her mane.

Worley said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
