LITCHFIELD, Conn. (May 20, 2009)—Temple-born actor Rip Torn has been given probation in a drunken driving case in Connecticut.

The 78-year-old Salisbury resident was approved Tuesday for admission into an alcohol education program.

The judge said Torn must be retested for his driver's license because of his severe hearing impairment.

The actor will still be allowed to drive.

Torn was arrested near his home in December while driving a car with a Christmas tree tied to the top.

He pleaded not guilty in January to drunken driving.

He qualified for the program even though he has two previous drunken driving arrests in New York.

Torn has appeared on the TV comedy "30 Rock" and has starred in the "Men in Black" movies.

Torn was born Elmore Rual Torn, Jr. on Feb. 6, 1931 in Temple.

He graduated from the University of Texas in 1952, and then moved to Hollywood.

Bless his old heart, I hope he'll be okay. Alot of that is what you grew up with. I don't drink now, but when I was younger, it was not a "bad" thing to get some beer, ice it down, and drive out in the country to look at the scenery. I am NOT saying it's okay, just saying it didn't seem so bad back then. Nobody got killed, nobody had a wreck, unless it was kids driving too fast.

I believe Rip Torn graduated from Texas A&M in 1952, not University of Texas. Just a FYI.
