WACO (May 26, 2009)—Thieves attempted to steal one of the four statues from a campus memorial to 10 Baylor students who died in a tragic bus accident in 1927, but they didn’t get far before the effort collapsed under its own weight.

The thieves removed the statue of Abe Kelley from the memorial, but it was found just 50 feet away.

A university spokeswoman said the statue was evidently too heavy for the thieves to carry any farther.

It wasn’t damaged.

The memorial features statues of Kelley and three other students who died in the accident.

The other six are depicted in bas-relief.

Kelley was one of the heroes of the crash.

He managed to push teammate Weir Washam out of the bus window moments before the train struck the bus.

The 10 were on their way to a basketball game at the University of Texas on Jan 22, 1927 when a train collided with their bus in Round Rock.
