(November 11, 2006)--President Bush is warning America's enemies not to interpret this week's election results as a sign of US weakness.
In his weekly radio address, Mr. Bush said the workings of American democracy must not be confused with a lack of American will.
He said the United States remains determined to bring its enemies to justice.
Mr. Bush also issued a call for unity, four days after voters threw Republicans from power in the House and Senate.
He says the voters sent a message that they want their leaders to set aside partisan differences and conduct themselves in an ethical manner.
Mr. Bush says it's time to "put these elections behind us, and work together on the great issues facing America."
Democrats, meanwhile, say their victory at the polls this week reflects a desire for change in Iraq.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean made that point in the party's weekly radio address.
He says, "Americans across the country made it clear that they want a new direction in Iraq and in the war on terror."
Dean is promising Democrats will respond by being "tough and smart."
He says they will listen to the military, take their advice, and "ensure that our troops and agencies have the tools and equipment they need to defend our freedom."
