SAN ANTONIO (May 27, 2009)--Hospital staff members testified Wednesday that an Air Force nurse charged with killing three terminally ill patients at a Texas military hospital handled a chart with medication orders that doctors denied writing.

Capt. Michael Fontana, 35, is accused of giving lethal amounts of medication to the patients last summer at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio.

The hearing at Lackland Air Force Base will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to send his case to court-martial.

Doctors said Wednesday some of the charts show drugs were administered in doses that are usually fatal, including the painkiller morphine and the anti-anxiety medication Ativan.

Fontana hasn't commented since being charged in March.

He previously worked as an EMT nurse in Austin.

Fontana has been in the Air Force since 2006 and served a tour at the military hospital in Balad, Iraq, from August to December 2007.

Witnesses at the Article 32 hearing, which is the military equivalent of a civilian grand jury review, are expected to carry into Thursday.
