BELLMEAD (May 27, 2009)—After meeting for two hours behind closed doors Wednesday, the Bellmead City Council voted 4-2 to fire longtime City Manager Scooter Radcliffe, but members gave no reason for the termination.

Council members Carl Swanson, Kevin Wilson, Doss Youngblood and David Schroeder voted in favor of firing Radcliffe.

Mayor Ruth Haines and Pct. 4 Councilman Robert Hawkins cast the only dissenting votes.

The only statement before the council voted in open session was made by Wilson who said he wanted it on the record that his vote had nothing to do with intoxication or the accident in which Radcliffe was involved on May 10 while driving a city-owned vehicle.

According to a report obtained by News 10, Radcliffe was driving a city-owned 2008 White Chevrolet Suburban north on Maxfield Street, when he made a right turn onto Wheeler Street just before noon on May 10.

According to the report, Radcliffe swerved, over-corrected to the right and the Suburban hit a telephone pole and a chain-link fence.

The report lists the damage to the fence at $185.

Radcliffe was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center with what the report described as a, "non-incapacitating injury."

Blood samples were taken at the hospital for alcohol and drug tests, but the spaces on the report where the results should appear are marked with dashes.

Bellmead Police Chief Robert Harold said the dashes indicate the test results were not available when the report was filled out.

The 2008 Suburban was taken to a repair facility in Waco.

On Tuesday afternoon, the owner of the repair shop estimated the repair bill to fix the SUV to be at least $12,000.

To: Concerned Intelligent Person. What the hell are you smoking? Scooter did a "Job" on Bellmead, alright. As far as the future of Bellmead goes, it appears that the citizens are speaking, the council is listening, and the wall is tumbling down around the mighty city hall and its inhabitants. So, put YOUR crack pipe up and stop harassing the REAL citizens of Bellmead!

Scooter Radcliffe needed to go he has done nothing good for the city but make it his own bank. The police dept needs changes as well. Because of the way things are ran they have lost good officers to Robinson, Hill, Freestone County and TABC. That should say something for itself. The city needs to focus on bringing in better personel so the they won't be known for the crime and drug activity. Good luck to the city of Bellmead. I will be watching.

I think the people being critical should get involved and run for city council/attend meetings. You obviously have NO IDEA what the job demands are. Seems like the EDUCATED people are the only ones being singled out! Get rid of them and Bellmead will LOSE!
