Tech Names New Chancellor
Texas Tech’s new chancellor is the only candidate every to have beaten George W. Bush in an election.

(November 13, 2006)--Former Congressman Kent Hance became chancellor of Texas Tech Monday.

Hance was named the sole finalist for the position last month, but 21 days had to pass before he could be offered the position.

The 1965 Tech graduate will begin his duties on Dec. 1 at an annual salary of $412,000.

He succeeds Dr. David Smith, who resigned in January to lead the Upstate Medical University in New York.

Hance, a Dimmitt native, is the only candidate to ever have beaten now-President George Bush in an election.

Hance was a Democrat in 1978 when he defeated Republican Bush in a run for Congress.

Hance, who switched parties in 1985, is a registered lobbyist in Austin.

He served on the Texas railroad commissioner from 1987 to 1990.

He's a part owner of Waste Control Specialists in Andrews County.
