HOUSTON (May 28, 2009)--Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott filed suit Thursday in Houston against the Conn's appliance chain, accusing the Beaumont-based chain of failing to honor product warranties, misleading customers about products, false advertising and other deceptive sales practices.
In a statement issued Thursday, Abbott said Conn's used "high-pressure sales tactics to deceive customers about their extended service warranties."
Court documents allege that Conn's sales personnel told warranty purchasers that replacements would be "new, unused" products.
The documents allege that, in reality, the warranty contract calls for replacement with "refurbished" or "rebuilt" items.
The state is seeking civil penalties and a court order to stop Conn's allegedly illegal conduct.
A message left with a Conn's spokesman was not returned Thursday.

I know now why Conn's have the name that they have, they are Professional Con-artist that is what Conn's stand for. We purchased several items from them, and have not had either item a year. We purchased a 65' Plasma, refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave. The Plasma has been service 3 times, each time replacing the bulb and the circuit board and we continue to have the television go out and if it is not that the volume. The dishwasher has been service four time and we still unable to use the dishwasher because it don't work. Each time they have come out they keep replacing the same board and heating element and the soap dispenser. I think that they hire their repairmen that have no experience. Every time they send someone out, they come up with same routine. They are very incompetent; I think that they train them all to come out say that this is what wrong with it. How about after keep replacing the same thing, after so many times and cannot fix, how about replace the items.
I purchased a television from conns on a friday, and that following sunday the tv went out. I took it back to the store the same day, the refused to give me another one. The suggested that i let their service department fix it. I said ok, the customer service rep, gave a work order receipt and then a month passed never heard back from them. I had got tththe televison on store credit and a lady from corporate office called and said that the tv could not be fixed and that i was given a store credit, but had until may 14,09, to purchase something else. otherwise, the account would be closed. I never did get anything else. Months passed by and they kept calling 6 times a day and sending collection letters for a past due payment. I wasn't paying, for something i didn't have. Conns reported to the credit agency, every month. That negative results has destroyed my credit rating for five months. I plan to sue also. I will no longer purchase appliances there again, nor will my family.
DO NOT BUY FROM CONN'S. I have a washing machine that broke after two loads. It has been 3 weeks, and it still has not been repaired. When the repair man came to repair the washing machine he said he could not do anything because he could not get it to come on. DUH. That is what I told them when I called. Dealing with Conn's is like dealing with a two year old. I also bought a treadmill from them. They delivered the treadmill (and the washing machine) in a pouring down rain. The treadmill was uncovered, not in a box and no plastic wrap. It was ruined. It has taken me 3 weeks to get it replaced, and I had to go through the CEO to get that done. I will never buy any other product from Conn's. Go get them Greg.
