OGLESBY (May 29, 2009)-An Oglesby woman on her way to work early Friday died in a one car collision less than a mile from her home.

Department of Public Safety Trooper Dave Roberts says Patricia Wilcox, 59, of Oglesby, was driving north on Farm-to-Market Road 1996 when her vehicle drifted across southbound lanes and then off of the roadway where it collided head-on with a tree about two-tenths of a mile south of U.S. Highway 84.

Witnesses on the scene say if not for the tree, Wilcox’s small Ford S.U.V. would have driven straight into a house.

It was the occupants of the house that notified authorities of the crash just after 4:45 a.m. Friday.

Roberts said the tire marks left on grassy front yards indicated Wilcox made no effort to evade the collision.

The accident remains under investigation.

Wilcox was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Firefighters from the Oglesby volunteer department removed Wilcox from the wreckage but were not able to revive her.

Coryell County Justice of the Peace Larry McDonald pronounced Wilcox dead at the scene at 5:57 a.m. He did not order an autopsy.

He told News 10 he believes Wilcox was not conscious when the accident happened.

Wilcox’s body was taken to Cole Funeral Home, in McGregor, where service arrangements are pending.

This is probably not going to make it in, but I knew Ms. Wilcox,1st as a friend, then, sadly, as 1 of her inmates, she cared for & protected us & encouraged us to do better..We will all miss her...

I just heard the terrible news. I am in complete awe. My thoughts and prayers are with the Wilcox family. She was a great officer and an asset to Woodman. Her pressence I'm sure, will be missed.
