AUSTIN (June 1, 2009)--The Texas Senate Monday selected Sen. Troy Fraser, R-Horseshoe Bay, to be the body's president pro tempore.

Fraser’s district includes Bell County.

He’ll serve in the post until the 2011 legislative session.

Senators formally selected Fraser Monday morning, before embarking on the last day of the current session.

It's largely a ceremonial role, but the person who holds the post takes over as the state's leader if the governor and lieutenant governor are both out of the state at the same time, which can mean being the presiding state leader on the day of an execution.
