Have A Company-Owned Cell Phone? You Could Be Taxed For It

WASHINGTON (June 12, 2009)—The Internal Revenue Service is considering whether to tax the cell phones that some companies issue to workers as a fringe benefit.
“If an employer provides a cell phone to an employee, and the employer acquires and pays the costs of using the cell phone, the employee receives a fringe benefit,” the IRS says in a bulletin issued earlier this week.
The IRS says the extent to which a company-issued cell phone is used for business purposes qualifies the phone as a working-condition fringe benefit, which is a deductbile business expense for employers.
But if employees also use those phones for personal reasons, then the value of the use is included in the calculation of employees’ gross income, the IRS said.
An existing rule effectively requires employees to substantiate the business use of “listed property,” which includes cell phones, and the poposal appears to be an effort to enforce a provision that’s now largely ignored.

Next Big Thing? Is that your support of the Great Obama? Since the Dumbocrats have been in charge we have seen nothing but spending of the honest tax payers money on those that can't seem to balance their money like a "High School Senior" as you put it. The large majority of us are tired of "Big Government" spending our money like comes from a Monopoly set. Mr. Obama and his colleagues will go down in history as the biggest spenders of the peoples money with no return, which is bad business, and is what happened in the first place with all these corporations that are now either filing for Bankruptcy or being bailed out of their self inflicted debt.
This is so stupid. i have a cell phone that work issued me and they are the only ones who call me or have the number so why would i be taxed for that. i would love to not have it, but job requires it. if it was my way i would have my own for personal use not work...
