WACO (June 15, 2009)—A 9-year-old boy who was struck by a car as he rode his bicycle Monday afternoon was taken to a Waco hospital.

The accident happened just after 3 p.m. Monday on North 62nd Street near the intersection with Edmond.

When paramedics arrived, the boy was lying on his side in the grass and his bicycle was underneath a car about 100 feet away, but the boy's injuries were minor, police said.

His name was not immediately released.

Police said the boy failed to yield at a stop sign.

The driver was cited for an insurance violation, police said.

I was just driving in this area the other day and this kid was riding his bike down the MIDDLE of the street with his feet of the pedals and on the seat. Did not bother to get out of the street nor look either way before he crossed traffic to ride down another street still coasting with his feet on the seat...as if he was the only one in the world!

To all of you condeming the driver, if you will read the article, it says the boy failed to stop at the stop sign. Which means it was his fault, not the driver. Why should he be cited. Since we can't watch the kids 24/7, we need to instill in them the knowledge on how to watch the road for car drivers and not to run any stop signs.

Hey Michelle, how you going to watch your kids while they are out bike riding? Ride with them or follow in a car? Truth is you can't watch your kids all the time nor should you. Kids have to be responsible for themselves and learn to do this. It's the "helicopter parent" mentality that is turning out this new generation of spoiled, cottled and "I can't do it without mommy or daddy" kids. Kids are going to do stupid things. Gosh, the things we used to do bike riding when I was young... had a few accidents too. But I learned from them. Perhaps this kid will learn to to be more careful while on a bike.
