MEXIA (June 15, 2009)--The U.S Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is investigating a fire that heavily damaged recycling plant Thursday just outside of Mexia.

Firefighters from Mexia, Teague, Wortham and Groesbeck responded to the fire at the Total Recycling Plant on Belknap Street.

Total Recycling collects and recycles oil waste products such as filters.

Because chemicals were inside the plant at the time of the fire, a private company has been hired to monitor hot spots, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is also investigating.

The ATF didn’t respond to News 10's inquiries about the investigation but the Mexia Fire Department does confirm the fire is being investigated as arson.

Some nearby residents complained that smoke from that fire was drifting into their homes, but said conditions have improved since last week.
