MEMPHIS, Tenn. (June 16, 2009)--Graceland is collecting stories from people who had contact with Elvis Presley over the years, and chances are at least a few Central Texas residents have some stories to tell.

After all, Presley was no stranger to this part of the state.

From March 28 to Sept. 17, 1958, Presley was stationed at Fort Hood for basic and advanced military training.

And he had a 22-year friendship with late Waco resident Edward Fadal, who first met the singer while a disk jockey at KRLD in Dallas.

Fadal entertained Presley several times after concerts at Waco’s Heat of Texas Coliseum and often during the months Presley was stationed at Fort Hood.

Graceland plans to assemble the results into an oral history collection called the Elvis Presley Legacy Project.

For example, there’s the story of John "Bull" Bramlett, who played touch football with Presley in the 1950s.

Bramlett went on to play professional football, but he notes that Presley made the better choice by going into show business.

Bramlett said that while Elvis was a "great guy," he was only "an average athlete" who he says "kind of ran like a girl,

The stories are being videotaped and will become part of the Graceland archives.
