(December 14, 2006)—Authorities in Dallas now believe a student discharged a teacher's pepper spray Thursday, forcing the evacuation of Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School and leaving about a dozen people in need of medical attention.
Earlier reports indicated that authorities suspected carbon monoxide was what led some students to complain of illness and breathing problems.
Officials say some students and one teacher complained of breathing or other throat-related problems and were taken to hospitals to be checked out.
Investigators say the pepper spray was in a container on a teacher's keychain.
Officials didn't immediately confirm whether the student who caused the health scare and the teacher were among those treated.
