HOUSTON (June 27, 2009)--Recent data from the Department of Veterans Affairs show Houston has among the biggest backlogs and longest waiting times of any office in the country for processing veterans' claims for disability benefits.
The Houston Chronicle reports nearly 18,000 veterans are waiting for the Houston VA Regional Office to process their applications for disability benefits.
Total claims in Houston, including non-disability compensations and pensions, add up to almost 24,000.
Twenty-four percent have been pending over six months.
That percentage is also higher than the national average.
Valerie Martinez, a Houston VA Regional Office spokeswoman, said in a statement that some claims have been outsourced to VA facilities elsewhere and plans are in the works to hire 105 employees to ease the backlog.

If you think this is bad, just wait until the Government gets NATIONAL HEALTH CARE FOR EVERYONE!
Absolutely correct John E. Salado!!!!!!!!!
Why does this happen??? Because the US Government creates more veterans by getting involved in more wars, but leaves the VA budget at pre-war standards!!! They increase the workload by 1000% but won't increase the VA budget by 5%! The government will give money away by the billions to other foreign countries and welfare systems, but tells the VA to pinch their pennies and account for every penny spent. Talk about a double standard! Our government should be throwing money at the veterans health care system instead of wasting it on other useless programs!
