MERIDIAN (June 30, 2009)—Former Meridian High School Principal Kelly Parker, who was accused of sending more than 80 sometimes-graphic text message to a 17-year-old girl, will avoid prison time under the terms of a plea deal.
According to Bosque County district court records, Parker pleaded guilty to one charge of improper relationship between educator and student on June 9 in 220th District Court in Meridian.
According to the county’s district clerk, 220th District Judge James E. Morgan sentenced Parker to 10 years probation, 300 hours of community service, and ordered that Parker surrender his teaching certificate.
He also ordered Parker to pay a $3,000 fine.
Parker does not have to register as a sex offender.
Bosque County District Attorney said the teenager and her family are satisfied with the plea agreement.
"It appeared to be in the best interest of justice, plus the victim didn't have to testify,” he said.
He said the fact there were no allegations of inappropriate contact also figured into the decision to offer the plea deal.
Parker was arrested Dec. 16 at the high school and was freed the next day after posting $25,000 bond.
According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Parker allegedly sent 81 text messages to the high school senior, including messages describing his genitals.
According to the affidavit, one of the messages stated, "its been a long time since had a principal student relationship."
The victim, who is referred to as Jane Doe throughout the affidavit, told police that Parker offered her money in exchange for "kisses," "hugs," and "sex."
The affidavit stated Jane Doe told police that she used to babysit for Parker, and he would tell her dirty jokes, buy her things, and give her cash.
She said he even bought the cell phone for her that he was using to text her.
According to the affidavit, Parker allegedly called Jane Doe as she was meeting with police.
It also states that Jane Doe told police she did not want a sexual relationship with Parker, telling police she told him on a number of times she wasn't interested, but that he persisted texting her.
Five cell phones were seized in the investigation and were sent to the Department of Safety Crime Lab where technicians will determine if any messages were erased.
Two of the cell phones belonged to the victim, two belonged to the principal, and one belonged to another girl who was not classified as a victim, police said.
