JONESBORO (July 6, 2009)--Monday morning house fires in Jonesboro and in Oglesby were evidently both started by lightning strikes.

The Jonesboro fire damaged a weekend residence just off State Highway 36, about 1-1/2 miles south of Jonesboro.

Gatesville Fire Chief Billy Vaden told News 10 the fire broke out at about 8 a.m. Monday after lightning struck near a heater vent on the roof of the house.

Vaden said damage was confined to the heater closet and hallway of the home.

No one was inside when the fire broke out.

Vaden said a family from Dallas owns the house.

A passer-by noticed smoke and called 911 to report the fire.

The Jonesboro Volunteer Fire Department, assisted by both Gatesville and Turnersville VFD, had the fire under control within about 10 minutes.

Earlier Monday, fire broke out in Oglesby when lightning struck an older wood frame house.

Vaden said units from Oglesby VFD and Gatesville were dispatched at about 5:30 to a large frame house on Beard St.

Vaden said damage to the house was minor.

Vaden said lightening struck the roof of the house on the northeast corner and blew all the electrical circuits in the home.

There were no injuries in either fire, Vaden said.

I do not know why some of you people have to form such bad attitudes on these comments. I for one,if I lived in Gatesville would not volunteer for the Fire Department or Billy's position. All of you better be glad he does what he does(without any pay)!!!
