Good morning, it’s Tuesday, July 7, the 188th day of 2009. There are 177 days left in the year. We’ll start the day in the lower 70s and there’s a chance of showers this morning. Showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon as temperatures rise into the upper 90s.

In 1919, the first Transcontinental Motor Convoy, in which a U.S. Army convoy of motorized vehicles crossed the United States, departed Washington D.C. The trip ended 3,200 miles later in San Francisco on Sept. 6, 1919. Future President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was then Lt. Col. Dwight Eisenhower, volunteered for the convoy, which involved nearly 300 men and several dozen trucks, motorcycles and tractors. The purpose was to determine whether a motorized military expedition could actually cross the continent, which in the days before paved highways was no sure thing. The convoy slogged along at an average speed of six miles an hour.
