HOUSTON (July 7, 2009)--Waller County Justice of the Peace Dewayne Charleston has been indicted in an alleged bribery scheme, which makes him the latest official in that Southeast Texas county to face federal corruption charges.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Houston said Charleston is charged with two counts of federal program fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit federal program fraud.
FBI agents arrested Charleston Tuesday morning at his house in Hempstead, about 50 miles west of Houston.
He was ordered released on a $100,000 bond after appearing before a federal magistrate in Houston.
Four other Waller County officials have been found guilty of corruption in the last year.
