WASHINGTON (July 7, 2009)—Waco’s Region 12 Education Service Center is receiving a $937, 386 grant from the U.S. Department of education to enhance history education for 5th, 8th and 11th grade students in schools in McLennan, Bosque, Limestone and Hill Counties, Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, announced Tuesday.
"This worthwhile program will help teachers expand their understanding of American history, which will translate into higher academic achievement for their students," Edwards said.
"This program is a win-win. Anytime the federal government can aid local school districts in preparing students to succeed, it is a wise investment in the future."
The service center will work with the American Institute for History Education, McNeese State University, the National Council for the Social Studies and Delaware State University in the effort to raise student achievement by improving the knowledge of and appreciation for traditional U.S. history, Edwards said.
