(January 3, 2007)--An 18-mile stretch of eastbound Interstate 20 was closed Wednesday morning in northeastern Louisiana, more than 12 hours after a westbound tractor-trailer crossed the median and slammed into an eastbound rig.
Two people were killed.
The accident happened about last night about 35 miles west of Vicksburg, Miss., near Waverly, La.
One of those killed was identified as 63-year-old Vernon Graves of Pana, Ill.
He was driving the westbound rig loaded with household products.
Also killed was 63-year-old James Watkins of Paris, Texas.
He was a passenger and co-driver of the other truck, which was carrying bread.
The Louisiana State Police says Watkins was thrown from the cab driven by 53-year-old Robert Atnip of Sumner, Texas.
Atnip's injuries were minor to moderate, and he was taken to Vicksburg Hospital.
State police Sgt. M.E. Cottingham says both trucks burned, and debris was still being cleared this morning.
Eastbound traffic between Delhi to Tallulah, La., is being diverted onto US Highway 80.
