EL PASO (July 14, 2009)--Federal agents say a high-powered rifle that an El Paso FBI agent illegally sold was used in a drug cartel shootout in Mexico last year, according to a 2008 search warrant affidavit from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

In the affidavit, ATF says it traced a .50-caliber rifle used in a March 2008 shootout in Chihuahua to John T. Shipley, an FBI agent arrested last week on charges that he illegally sold guns via a Web site.

A Mexican army captain was killed in the nearly three-hour shootout between soldiers and cartel fighters.

The search warrant doesn't identify which drug cartel was involved.
