(January 4, 2007)--The first Muslim ever elected the House of Representatives, Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minnesota, ceremonially took the oath of office Thursday on a copy of the Quran that once belonged to President Thomas Jefferson.

The Muslim holy book was on loan from the Library of Congress, where Jefferson's book collection, purchased by the government in 1815, is kept.

Ellison's announcement that he would swear the oath on a copy of the Koran prompted criticism last month from Rep. Virgil Goode, R-Virginia.

Ellison posed for a photo of the book with newly elected Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-California, who is the first woman ever to hold the office.
