FORT HOOD (July 20, 2009)--Fort Hood Spc. Armando Ray Baca remained in custody Monday evening after a weekend shooting at a Fort Hood housing area that claimed the life of Spc. Ryan Richard Schlack, 30, of Oshkosh, Wis.

Both Baca and Schlack were assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division’s B Company, 27th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team and both returned to post in May after deploying to Iraq in June 2008.

A Fort Hood deputy public affairs officer said Schlack was struck in the hip when shots were fired into a crowd early Saturday at a home in McNair Village.

He was taken to Darnall Army Medical Center where he later died, the spokesman said.

Baca was arrested at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at Fort Hood’s Main Gate, the spokesman said.

Schlack joined the Army in May 2004 and arrived at Fort Hood in February 2005.

1st I would like to post about the shooting. After a short look into other shootings on bases it is obvious to me that the Army really needs to do a better job on debriefings towards those returning from duty in hot spots. One can not just turn off the aggressive thinking as soon as you come out of battle, many need help in dealing with what they have done, seen and heard. Another thing the military needs to stop is calling a soldier weak because he has problems once they return from a mission. 2nd I would like to post about the current shooting. With what I have been able to read to date I have noticed a very major issue. If it is rumored or implied that a person may have ties with an organization which may be deemed radical then the military should temporally pull them off of duty for observations. Please do understand that the cases opened should be across the board and not target any one group or religion. Maybe then it could be safer for all.
