HOUSTON (July 19, 2009)--A pilot was hospitalized after crashing his experimental plane in a backyard in the Houston suburb of La Porte, authorities said.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford says the aircraft was mostly destroyed in the crash Saturday morning.

He said no one on the ground was hurt.

La Porte police say the pilot told them the plane would not gain altitude while trying to take off from La Porte Municipal Airport.

The plane struck some pine trees near the fence line of the airport.

Police say other people were removing the pilot from the wreckage when officers arrived.

Police said the pilot appeared to be suffering head trauma and said his right leg hurt.

The pilot wasn't identified.
