TYLER (July 20, 2009)—A man shot his ex-girlfriend as she arrived for work early Monday at a Tyler hospital before killing himself, police said.

The woman was shot three times early Monday near East Texas Medical Center, but she managed to run to the emergency room, where she is an admissions clerk.

Police said Charles Aundrell Bell, 29, was waiting for Amber Lashea Pinkney, 27, to arrive for work at around 2:20 a.m. Monday.

According to police, Bell opened fire as Pinkney was getting out of her vehicle, then shot himself.

Police say Pinkney was shot in the jaw, hand and shoulder area.

She underwent surgery and was in stable condition.

Officer Don Martin told The Associated Press that Bell died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

ETMC operates Waco’s EMS ambulances.

ETMC said the hospital uses security guards and surveillance
cameras.

Employees can request an escort to and from their vehicles
at any time, or use shuttle buses for outlying areas.
