(January 8, 2007)--The White House honored six cultural institutions Monday including the San Antonio Public Library.
The six institutions were hailed for creativity and public service in what First Lady Laura Bush described as one of her favorite events.
Joining Mrs. Bush was Anne-Imelda Radice, director of the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.
They paid tribute to innovative outreach programs at three public libraries, a museum, a zoo and an aquarium.
Besides the San Antonio library, other recipients of the 2006 Institute of Museum and Library Services awards are the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Artrain USA and its traveling exhibits; the Frankfort Community Public Library of Frankfort, Ind.; the John G. Shedd Aquarium of Chicago; the Lincoln Children's Zoo of Lincoln, Neb., and the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County in Charlotte, N.C.
