SAN ANTONIO (July 24, 2009)—The Daughters of the Republic of Texas say they’re doing just fine maintaining the Alamo despite a call from two members and the shrine’s former director for a better financial plan.
The organization has never operated the Alamo in the red, but former director David Stewart wants the Alamo run more like a modern museum, with national accreditation and a business plan.
Gift-shop sales have successfully provided 90 percent of the site's $5.5 million operating budget.
The Alamo receives no state funding and offers free admission.
This week the fighting led a breakaway group to established its own Alamo nonprofit.

That group has done a helluva lot more for the Alamo than the French Embassy in Austin. That place is horribley treated. My aunt worked in saving the French Embassy. Last time I visited there was only one staff member on site, giving tours, answering the phones, booking a wedding AND assisting a college student who was doing research. She was a very nice young lady and seemingly very smart/educated but clearly overworked. We are lucky the place is still standing under the DRT's "care."
I say leave them alone too. They have been doing great all these years but I think the Texas government should throw a little money their way (no questions asked) to help them preserver not only what is a Texas National Treasure but a WORLD treasure as the Alamo is known world wide.
to someone it is not the DAR. it is the DRT. PLEASE LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!
