TEMPLE (July 28, 2009)—Funeral services are Thursday in Hydro, Okla., for Stephanie Wingard, 16, of Thomas, Okla. who died Sunday night at Scott & White Hospital, about eight hours after she suffered severe head injuries when she was thrown from a motorcycle that struck a culvert along a rural road east of Temple.
Wingard, who was in Central Texas to attend a church youth fellowship meeting in Lott, was riding Sunday on a motorcycle driven by David Miller, 20, of Chilton.
Miller was westbound on FM 3369 about 5 ½ miles east of Temple and driving through a curve when he lost control of the 2004 Honda Shadow motorcycle as he attempted to pull back to the right from the centerline to avoid an oncoming truck.
The motorcycle ended up on the grassy shoulder where it struck a culvert.
Miller and Wingard were thrown from the motorcycle.
Miller, who was wearing a helmet, escaped serious injury.
Wingard, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered serious head injuries.
She was flown by helicopter to Scott & White.
Her parents, Olen and Emily Wingard, who flew to Temple Sunday in a private plane, according to an account posted on HansMast.com, made the decision to take their daughter off life support.
She died just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday, the Web site says.
She’s survived by her parents and three brothers, from Zion Amish-Mennonite Church in Thomas, Okla.

Kevin, as a Christian you are not supposed to let others opinions get under your skin. If someone says they do not like religion let it be. God has nothing to do with religion, religion is just something that people use to classify themselves into a group. God, the creator of all human kind is God. We worship Him and love Him for who He is and what He does, and it is not because of religion.
Kevin and I had a good long talk at Steph's funeral and we don't disagree. If I was in his place, I would be saying some of the same things he's saying. However, I'm not in his place. I'm in the place of being Steph's friend. Thus, my response needs to be forgiveness as commanded by Christ. If I would bear responsibility--even peripheral responsibility--for this accident, I would be taking responsibility. Those are also commands of Christ. Blessings to you, Kevin, as you help lead your youth group through this difficult time. May God fill you with wisdom on how to bear the responsibility without being burdened with false guilt for what is forgiven by Christ. Both of these are necessary for you. We need God's wisdom in trying to discern how the two fit together. Isn't that one of the greatest questions in life? How mercy and justice meet?
@Ed in Cove. I am sorry for my very late response to you. Thank you friend for your kind response! I beg to disagree with you in 2 statements you made. 1. I do not take you to be a religion hating atheist, but rather a person who has a good common sense & justice which reflect the very nature of our Creator. 2. There is nothing good of myself and I owe any credit to the One who changed my life & makes All things New! I am a born Skeptic but when I Wanted to know the Truth at all cost, even my own will, the Lights came on! I have found that though I don't understand them all, the Proverbs of Solomon are so full Truth & common sense for everyday living, I highly recommend them as a good starting point for anyone like me who wants what is right & makes sense. It has changed my life! You are Loved.
