FORT HOOD (July 28, 2009)—An investigation was underway Tuesday at Fort Hood after a woman dressed in medical scrubs attempted to kidnap a newborn Monday from the Mother-Baby Ward of Darnall Army Medical Center.

Fort Hood released two photographs Tuesday of a woman described as a person of interest in the attempted abduction.

The hospital’s infant abduction warning alarm thwarted the kidnapping, Fort Hood said Tuesday.

The hospital was locked down and exits were blocked while hospital staff, security guards and agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command checked the identification of everyone in the hospital.

The statement about the abduction that Fort Hood released late Tuesday afternoon did not indicate whether the would-be kidnapped was arrested.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the Fort Hood CID Office at 254-287-2722, Fort Hood Military Police at 254-287-4001 or to e-mail Hood.CID.SAC.RA@conus.army.mil.

I work on these security systems. not every hospital has one. not every hospital that has one maintains and or uses it like they should. the ones that care are tested on a regular basis and you can always ask about testing and procedures. this system is not perfect, but we do guarantee notification. the trick, is the fact that a well maintained system does not have "false" alarms and so when the staff have an alarm they know it is real and respond. imagine if they had 20 false alarms a day due to system neglect..........you would be surprised at the hospitals that have it and dont maintain it...just have to say they have it...the best ones have the video incorporated.....i'm just saying

Rooming in is not completely fool proof. Do you know how many times I have walked into patient rooms and had to wake the mom up to ask her about her baby? Besides the fact, nurses still have to take the babies for assessments and weights so they don't stay in the rooms with the Mom's 100% of the time. Yes, the alarm systems are awesome and I agree with the others, if it was an inside job she would have known about the alarm system and never would have tried it the way she did. The alarm systems are there to assist with detection and deter abduction. It's a great system and works well for what it is intended to do. The best thing you can do as parents is to always ask questions. Question who comes in your room to deal with you or your baby. Ask to see an ID. All hospital employees should have a current ID on themselves and easily seen. If they don't then you need to call the nurses station and question it. Always err on the side of caution and question anything that may not look right.
