Police Identify TSTC Campus Shooting Victims

TSTC Campus (July 31, 2009)-A man is dead and his wife injured following a shooting Friday morning in a residential neighborhood on the Texas State Technical College campus.

TSTC and Lacy Lakeview police were called to the scene at 308 Maxwell at about 7:45 a.m. Friday and immediately cordoned off the area.

Police officers found a female, identified as Brenda Beringer, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Brenda Beringer was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center where she underwent emergency surgery. She is listed in stable condition as of Saturday.

Officers also found a male, identified as Daniel Beringer, suffering from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Kristi DeCluitt.

A weapon was recovered by police officers at the scene.

Next-door neighbor Steve Smith told News 10 he heard four gunshots Friday morning; three in succession followed by a fourth just moments later.

Smith said he saw a woman, later identified as Brenda Beringer, being taken from the residence on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance, which later drove away from the scene, presumably to the hospital.

Smith told News 10 a man, his wife, daughter and another man live at the home.

Campus officials notified students, faculty and employees of the incident via text message Friday morning.

That text read:

“This morning TSTC Waco Police Department received a call of a shooting in the college's campus family housing. Police are investigating an attempted murder and suicide. The college administration would like all students, faculty and staff to know that there is no danger.

To confirm: reply with 'yes' and send.”

Police are investigating Friday's shooting incident an attempted murder/suicide.
