(August 2, 2009) - Nearly 20 years after the United States suffered its first casualty during the Persian Gulf War, the remains of the U.S. Navy pilot have been found and identified.
Captain Michael "scott" Speicher disappeared in 1991 after he was shot down over the Iraq desert on the first night of the Gulf War.
Soon after, then Secretary of Defense, Dick Cheney, announced publicly the U.S had lost a serviceman, but, no body was ever found.
The wreckage of his jet was discovered three years later along with a tattered flight suit.
Then, in 2003, the initials M.S.S, were found carved into a prison wall in an Iraqi cell leading some to believe Speicher may have still been alive.
About a month ago, the U.S military received information that a group of Iraqi Bedouins had buried some remains near the original crash site.
Those remains were recovered and recently identified as those belong to Scott Speicher.
Speicher was from Jacksonville, Florida.
Sen. Bill Nelson, Florida, says he plans to take down the POW/MIA flag in honor of Speicher down now that the mystery has been solved.
President Barack Obama sent his condolences to the family of Speicher and said he hopes the recovery of the remains brings them a "needed sense of closure."
