AUSTIN (August 14, 2009)--The Texas Public Utility Commission is allowing the electric delivery company Oncor to charge customers $115 million more each year, which works out to about $2.50 to $3 a month for the average residential customer.
The increase includes $7.8 million that consumers will pay for Oncor's first round of smart meters, which were replaced because they were purchased before the commission wrote standards for that the meters didn’t meet.
That translates to about 35 cents more a month for an average customer.
The Dallas Morning News reported Friday that those charges are in addition to $2.21 a month consumers already pay on their electricity bills for the second round of high-tech meters, which were designed to give people more information about their consumption to help them conserve.
Oncor was seeking approval to increase rates by total of $256 million.

I think it's time for the public to stand-up and demand that Governor Perry fire the current members of the Texas PUC and replace them with citizens who will hold down the cost of energy for Texans. Most every household in Texas in the past several years has seen a significant increase in their monthly electric bills. It's not a good time for Texas families and businesses to be forced to pay higher prices at the meter simply because Oncor wanted some new toys. Oncor should pay for the new meters and not the citizens of Texas. Additionally, citizens should demand that local city leaders start building and operating local municipal electric plants. The cities of Austin and Garland operate their own electric plants and their citizens enjoy significant savings every month. I call on every citizen to contact Governor Perry's office immediate and demand that he re-appoint a public utility commission that will be on the side of the public and not multi-billion dollar corporatio
These smart meters, overall will save Oncor money. They will need fewer meter readers, and they will have complete, accurate reading for each bill. The meter readers will have a device that can read the meter from a distance all they have to do is punch in the address, aim at the box, and pull a trigger, meter read, on to the next one. They will even be able to do this from their vehicle and they will complete more readings faster. Why do they need funds for this when they will save even more in the long run???
