WACO (August 14, 2009)—The prognosis appears to be good for a Waco High School football player who’s regaining feeling and motion in his extremities after what was described as a helmet-to-helmet hit during a drill Friday on the school’s practice field.

A second player suffered a broken wrist during the drill.

Both were taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center.

A teammate told a News 10 reporter that the more seriously injured player ducked his head during a play, hit another player and then fell to the ground.

After that he did not move, the teammate said, but he was alert and talking, as he was loaded into an ambulance.

Waco ISD spokesman Dale Caffey said the player, whose name was not released, underwent both a CAT scan and an MRI.

He said doctors determined that the player did not suffer a concussion.

He does, however, have some lingering weakness, Caffey said.

Firefighters and paramedics were dispatched to the school just before 12:15 p.m. Friday.

Glad this kid is doing well and appears to be headed for a full recovery. Let this be a lesson to never, EVER, duck your head. Always have your head up and look where you are going. Impacts with your head down can be crippling.
