VERNON (August 26, 2009)—A Vernon Middle School student was found unresponsive at home and was later pronounced dead the morning after he went through football practice in triple-digit heat.

Wilbarger County Justice of the Peace Lewis Templeton said Wednesday a toxicology report should determine whether the death of Brent Shinn, 13, was heat-related.

Foul play has been ruled out.

The teenager from Vernon Middle School was found unresponsive Tuesday morning and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Vernon School Superintendent Tom Woody said practice lasted a little more than an hour Monday afternoon.

The temperature was about 105, according to the National Weather Service.

Vernon is about 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth.

ONE hour of practice in 105 heat... I can say this is not the coaching staffs error. They stopped practice due to heat. Congrats on the sissyifcation of the american youth!

How many soldiers do you hear of dying of heat strokes and other heat related illnesses? Working in 130 degree heat with full gear on......who are not young??? Wait they work out in it all the te and are used to it!!!! Kids will become use to it if they get off their lazy butts and get outside during the summer instead if sitting in the a.c.

You cant blame anyone but the parents and the kid. They should have been watching and taking care of their him and if he wasnt feeling well he should have said something. Im currently in iraq in 130 heat with full gear and we have no problems...some of these kids in middle and high school are in better shape than we are so its neglect on the parents part in my opinion. The coaches are not to blame at all.
