(February 7, 2007)--Some children were part of a crowd of several hundred today at a Texas Capitol rally backing a plan to allow school vouchers.

Signs were held that said: "What about the children" and "Give kids a chance with school choice."

A proposal in the Legislature would allow state tax money to be spent on private school tuition for some at-risk students.

Lawmakers in Austin have routinely rejected the issue.

Critics argue that such a program would drain money from public schools and that taxpayer dollars shouldn't go to schools that aren't accountable to the state.

Public school advocates will counter the Capitol event with a "virtual lobby day."

Educators from around the state have been encouraged to e-mail their lawmakers voicing opposition to voucher legislation.
