(February 8, 2007)--Both US senators from Texas pressed Thursday for more money in a sweeping spending bill to pay for restructuring of military bases.

Republicans Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn wanted to add $3.1 billion to the spending bill.

Democrats were resisting amendments because of a deadline for funding the federal government.

Democrats say they added $1 billion to the Base Closure and Realignment Commission account. They plan to provide more during a review of an emergency-spending bill for the wars in
Iraq and Afghanistan.

Democratic Congressman Charlie Gonzalez of San Antonio says the spending bill now being debated faces "the realities of what was fiscally responsible."

His district includes Wilford Hall hospital, which is due to partially close.

The 2005 round of base closings tabbed San Antonio as a military medical research hub.
