SAN MARCOS (September 4, 2009)--An attempted home invasion early Friday in San Marcos left two teenagers dead and a third seriously injured.

San Marcos Police Chief Howard Williams says the two 16-year-olds who died when the homeowner opened fire early Friday on the would-be robbers were from Luling, about 20 miles southeast of San Marcos.

A statement from Williams says a third teen was seriously wounded.

Police say one teenager had a handgun, while two others were armed with pellet guns.

Williams said a fourth suspect, a 17-year-old who fled but was captured when he returned to the scene, was unharmed and faces an aggravated robbery charge.

The shootings happened shortly before 2 a.m. Friday.

Police did not immediately release names of the teenagers.

Williams says police responded to a call of a home invasion and shots fired.

Officers arrived to find "several people shot by a resident of the home."

Police say three residents of the home were not injured.

Good for you, Texas. Here in New England the homeowner would most likely have been arrested.

"Why didn't the homeowner shoot to maim rather than kill?" The person who asked this question has watched too many Saturday Matinee cowboy movies where the good guy shoots the gun out of the bad guy's hand. That only happens in the movies. At 2am in a dark house it's a little hard to aim for legs and arms. Doing so will get you killed if your assailant is armed. One should never shoot to kill. We shoot to stop. The first is a stupid attitude, the second is a necessary goal. If they happen to die, then that is an unhappy result of their criminal activity.

I'm pretty sure most of the people posting in the comments are hicks and guns nuts. But I do believe the homeowner was doing the right thing. Even police are trained to shoot to kill when a suspect is armed. Although if the kids were not armed, then the home owner would be at fault. This article is highly inaccurate for me to clearly assess the situation. Is it known that the homeowner gave away a warning that he is armed and will open fire or not? How seriously injured was the third kid? And why were the kids so far away from their town? Why didn't the homeowner shoot to maim rather then kill? Either way reading most of these comments make me want to /facepalm.
