WACO (September 5, 2009)—The Texas Department of Public of Safety is putting all of its available troopers on the road over the long holiday weekend to keep an eye out for drunken drivers and seatbelt law violators.

The stepped up patrols started Friday and continue through midnight Monday.

“Drivers and their passengers should choose a safe ride to wherever they’re going this weekend,” said Assistant Director David Baker, who oversees the Texas Highway Patrol.

“Calling a cab or sober friend for a ride is much cheaper than getting arrested for DWI and going to jail.”

DWI convictions remain on criminal and driving records forever and they’re expensive.

A first offender could be sentenced to as much as six months in jail, fined as much as $2,000 and faces a one-year driver’s license suspension.

A conviction also means a $1,000 surcharges for three years.

Last year, troopers arrested 623 people over the long Labor Day weekend for driving while intoxicated and issued more than 10,000 speeding citations and 2,500 citations for seatbelt violations.

To Anonymous, I'll tell you the same thing. This blog and Article is owned/controlled by KWTX. And they do 'not' have to approve your or my comment here, and it has 'nothing' to do with freedom of speech. Your Freedom of Speech ends when it offends someone/anyone else. And this Article does 'not' have anything to do with some preacher some where else, in some other State, regardless of the circumstances/results. The Texas DPS Trooper's are having to work to provide safer Highways for people to drive/travel on.

To Speedy gonzales:taco bell, this article has nothing to do with freedom of speech either. And No if KWTX does not want to add the comment to the list, They run the thing, and they don't have to print your's or my comments. And if you have a residency in the State of Texas, you have 30 days(by Law) to get Texas License plates, Drivers license and Insurance. And 'no' I did not vote for the President or act as you say 'a fanatic'. I have 'nothing' to hide from any Police Officer or Lawman/woman!! Thank you.

What's offensive on this comments page, are those who want to stifle free speech. i googled and then read the story which justace refers to, and after watching the video, its clear the preacher was murdered. anyone ever wonder why during the holidays the police and troopers have to make such a presence?, this country was founded on freedom, and free speech. both of which are evaporating before my eyes. but as for someone near here recommends: sit down, shutup, dont ask any questions, and lick them jack-boots.
